Senator Nelson Can’t Point to What He’s Done for Florida Teachers

Senator Nelson claims he is for the middle class and fighting for education issues that matter to Floridians, yet

  • Senator Nelson voted for sequestration, despite knowing the devastating effects it would have on Florida’s education system, including cutting $54.5 million for primary and secondary education in Florida, slashing funding for 95,000 students and 130 schools, and risking the jobs of hundreds of Florida teachers. (“White House Estimates Of State-By-State Impacts Of Sequestration: Florida,” The Washington Post, 2/25/13)
  • Instead of working to support Florida’s teachers, Senator Nelson worked to take more of their hard-earned money by voting in favor of higher taxes and feesmore than 300 times over the course of his nearly half century in office.

“Governor Scott has worked hard to support Florida’s teachers by securing the first statewide teacher pay raise in Florida history and securing teacher supply grants so educators have the resources they need to prepare students for future success. Senator Nelson, on the other hand, has been in Congress for a half century and can’t point to anything he has done for Florida’s students and teachers… except putting their jobs at risk and taking more of their hard-earned money by supporting higher taxes.” – Lauren Schenone, Scott for Florida Press Secretary
